China Shard Magnets & Embracing Beauty in our Imperfections

Posted by Ariel Davis on

At The Brooklyn Teacup, we’re known for transforming cherished porcelain into bespoke tiered trays and timeless decor. But not every piece of china we encounter arrives intact. Some are chipped, cracked, or shattered. Instead of discarding these fragments, we see an opportunity to celebrate their imperfections and give them new life.

Our china shard magnets are a testament to this philosophy, turning broken pieces into meaningful creations that tell a story of resilience and renewal.

What Are China Shard Magnets?

Our shard magnets are crafted from broken pieces of china that, despite their cracks and fractures, still hold charm and history. By carefully upcycling these shards into elegant magnets, we give them a new life—one that celebrates their imperfections instead of hiding them.

These magnets aren’t just functional for holding reminders, photos, or holiday cards on your fridge; they’re a metaphor for resilience and transformation. They remind us that even broken things have value and can find purpose in a new form.

Why These Magnets Matter

The holiday season brings contrasts into sharp focus for many of us—joy and gratitude mixed with reflection and, sometimes, heaviness. For me, this time of year is particularly poignant as I reflect on my own journey with mental health.

Six years ago, I faced one of the darkest chapters of my life. Battling severe depression, I reached a point where I couldn’t see a way forward. Thankfully, that moment didn’t define the end of my story. Today, I share my experience openly to help destigmatize mental illness and remind others that healing and hope are always possible.

It’s this philosophy—of finding beauty in brokenness—that inspires our shard magnets. They’re not just objects; they’re a statement of hope, resilience, and the potential for renewal.

Supporting Mental Health

In honor of this journey and in recognition of the importance of mental health resources, we donate 100% of proceeds from our china shard magnet sales to The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI-NYC). This incredible organization provides critical resources and support to those navigating mental health challenges.

By purchasing a set of magnets, you’re not just bringing a unique and meaningful item into your home—you’re contributing to vital mental health initiatives that can make a difference in someone’s life.

How to Get Yours

Our china shard magnets are available at our studio. By popular demand,  they’re now also listed on our Shopify shop!

Every purchase supports NAMI-NYC's mission to provide all New Yorkers with access to critical mental health resources. The magnets also serve as a poignant reminder that our own imperfections and struggles don't need to define us. With the right tools, support, and care, we are all capable of healing, growing, and becoming something even more beautiful and resilient than we were before.

If You or Someone You Know Is Struggling

If you’re in crisis or need support, help is always available. Call 988 or chat online at 988lifeline.org. You are not alone.

Thank you for helping us turn broken pieces into beauty, for supporting mental health, and for being part of a community that believes in second chances—for people and porcelain alike. 💛
